As we inch closer to the new year, there’s something powerful in the air. No, it’s not just the leftover holiday cookies or the pine-scented candles—it’s the opportunity to reset, reclaim, and redesign your life. And this year, on December 26th, I’m doing something I’ve never done before: sitting down with pen, paper, and purpose to map out my life plan.
Let’s be honest. For too long, many of us have lived on autopilot. Default mode isn’t just for smartphones—it’s been the theme of our lives. But as midlife women, we
reach a turning point. Default mode doesn’t cut it anymore. We’ve given so much to everyone else—our careers, families, friendships, and communities. Now, it’s time to give back to ourselves by intentionally designing the life we want.
Creating a life plan as a midlife woman is more than just a New Year’s resolution. It’s a declaration of independence, a love letter to your future self, and a roadmap to your dreams. Let’s dive into why it’s crucial to have a life plan—and how you can create one that reflects your deepest desires.
Why Is Creating a Life Plan So Important?
1. Midlife Is a New Beginning, Not an End.
Forget the outdated narrative that midlife is about winding down. This is your time to rev up, shift gears, and embark on a journey that’s all about you. A life plan helps you embrace this chapter as a fresh start rather than a finish line.
2. It Puts You Back in the Driver’s Seat.
Without a plan, life tends to make decisions for you. Creating a life plan lets you decide where you’re headed and ensures your choices align with your values, passions, and priorities. You deserve to feel in control.
3. You Deserve to Live Intentionally.
Life is too precious to spend it on autopilot. A life plan helps you live with purpose, whether that means launching a new career, strengthening relationships, or finally learning to salsa dance.
How to Create Your Midlife Life Plan in 7 Steps
Here’s your blueprint for crafting a life plan that’s as dynamic and inspiring as you are:
1. Create Your Vision Statement
Start with your dream life. Close your eyes and imagine what your ideal day, year, or decade looks like. Where are you? What are you doing? Who’s with you?
Now, put it into words. Write a vision statement that reflects your aspirations. For example:
“I am living a vibrant, balanced life filled with meaningful work, loving relationships, and opportunities for growth. I prioritize my health, happiness, and passions every day.”
This vision becomes your North Star—a reminder of where you’re headed when life throws curveballs.
2. Perform a Self-Assessment
Take stock of where you are right now. Consider these key areas of your life:
• Wellness & Health: Are you taking care of your body and mind?
• Relationships: Are your connections fulfilling, or do they need nurturing?
• Career & Financial Wellness: Do you feel secure and purposeful in your work?
• Personal Growth: Are you challenging yourself to learn and grow?
• Style & Beauty: Are you thriving in your own skin and expressing yourself fully?
Be honest. This isn’t about judgment; it’s about clarity.
3. Prioritize Your Focus Areas
Once you’ve assessed your life, identify the areas that need the most attention. You can’t tackle everything at once, so prioritize. Maybe this is the year you focus on financial wellness and relationships, while keeping other areas in maintenance mode.
Write down your top 3-4 focus areas for the year.
4. Identify Your Core Values
Your core values are the compass that guides your decisions. They’re the “why” behind your goals. Take a moment to reflect: What matters most to you? Freedom, connection, growth, creativity?
Write down your top 5 values and let them shape your plan. For instance, if health is a core value, your goals should align with prioritizing your physical and mental well-being.
5. Set SMART Goals
SMART goals are:
• Specific: Clearly define what you want.
• Measurable: Make sure you can track your progress.
• Achievable: Be realistic but ambitious.
• Relevant: Align with your values and priorities.
• Time-bound: Set deadlines.
For example, instead of saying, “I want to get healthier,” try: “I will exercise 4 times a week for 30 minutes and lose 10 pounds by June 2025.”
Break your goals into categories based on your focus areas.
6. Outline Your Action Plan
Goals without action are just dreams. Here’s where the magic happens:
• Break each goal into actionable steps.
• Schedule those steps in your planner, Google Calendar, or phone reminders.
• Commit to daily, weekly, and monthly actions.
For instance, if your goal is to strengthen your relationships, schedule weekly coffee dates with friends or send a thoughtful text every Friday.
The key is consistency. Small steps add up to big changes over time.
7. Reflect and Adjust Monthly
Your life plan isn’t set in stone—it’s a living document. Set aside time each month to review your progress. What’s working? What’s not? Adjust your goals and actions as needed.
Reflection can be as simple as journaling on the last Sunday of each month:
• What did I accomplish?
• Where did I struggle?
• What’s my focus for next month?
